Santa Croce
Santa Croce is the burial place of Florence's great and powerful: Michelangelo, Rossini, Macchiavelli and the Pisan Galileo Galilei. The Church of Santa Croce in Florence hosts an immense artistic heritage with its frescoes by Gaddi in the Cappella Maggiore and those by Giotto in the lateral chapels. The Church's current exterior is a polychrome marble facade that was added in 1863. It overlooks Piazza Santa Croce, where one of the city's most popular folkloric events is held each year, the Calcio Storico Fiorentino (an ancient form of soccer).
